Mikael started by talking about the anticipated launch of Cinnamon Life at City of Dreams Sri Lanka, scheduled to open later this year, which he acknowledged as very exciting. He admitted that the project keeps him up at night but emphasised their immense excitement about the collaboration with City of Dreams and Melco. Mikael highlighted that their goal was always larger than just a hotel or integrated resort project; it aimed to bring a new level of focus and drive to Colombo and Sri Lanka’s economy.
Mikael explained that the project’s origins date back about ten years before his involvement, when the land was owned by John Keells. The focus was not solely on benefiting Cinnamon but on creating a game changer for the country. Mikael emphasised the importance of making the project internationally renowned and differentiated. He outlined his approach upon joining the project five years ago, pointing out the need to attract key talent and create synergies within Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts and Cinnamon Life. Mikael stressed that the project’s success depended on the people involved, not just the building itself. He viewed Cinnamon Life as a platform to establish standards and shape the future of Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts.
Mikael stressed the Sri Lankan culture forms the cornerstone of the brand. He highlighted that Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts and Cinnamon Life aim to showcase the best of Sri Lanka to the world with style and elegance. Mikael pointed out the natural hospitality ingrained in Sri Lankan culture and discussed the juxtaposition between this traditional warmth and the modernity of Cinnamon Life. He believed that merging these elements creates magic within the project.
Mikael highlighted sustainability and eco-tourism as significant trends, noting that Sri Lanka has a natural inclination towards eco-tourism ingrained in its culture. He said that sustainability is instinctive for Sri Lanka and is a cornerstone of their approach, both as a country and within their hotel projects. Mikael mentioned that they are constantly seeking to evolve this message through their properties and engagements. He also mentioned the curiosity surrounding new developments at the Arabian Travel Market, especially considering the innovative nature of Dubai.
Mikael reflected on his 30-year experience in the industry. He described the shift from a focus on privacy and polished service to an era where technology became synonymous with luxury. Eventually, social media transformed luxury into a personalised experience, where knowing intimate details about guests became essential. Mikael highlighted the importance of providing excellent products, service, and quality, regardless of the evolving trends in luxury.
Mikael announced several key goals for the next few years. Firstly, he aimed to double tourism numbers or even exceed that target, which would benefit the economy and tourism industry in Sri Lanka. Secondly, Mikael emphasised the importance of elevating hospitality standards across all hotel brands, not solely through price but through brand value. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the industry in Sri Lanka, which often led to a focus on price rather than brand. Lastly, Mikael expressed a desire to see further investment in the industry, enabling the growth and development of both established and emerging brands, thus ensuring the industry and the country progress together.
Suresh highlighted the group’s vision to position Colombo as a centre for lifestyle and entertainment in the South Asian region. He described the aim to create an iconic landmark in Colombo, akin to the Sydney Opera House. Suresh expressed pride in the transformation already evident in the city due to the project, noting increased awareness of Sri Lanka and Colombo. He underscored that the project goes beyond the property itself, contributing to the opening up of the city as a tourism destination.
Suresh reflected on Colombo’s beauty, culture, and character, expressing pride in showcasing these qualities to the world through their project. He described the endeavour as a significant investment and an ambitious, daring project, navigating through challenging construction periods. Despite the difficulties, he noted the project’s readiness for fruition.
Suresh acknowledged the uniqueness of the substantial investment, particularly amidst the global context post-Covid. He highlighted the project as one of the largest hotel openings globally. Regarding Colombo’s development, Suresh expressed excitement, noting other significant property openings and the city’s rising prominence as a regional destination. He spotlighted their substantial presence in Colombo’s hospitality sector and their role in the city’s growth.
Suresh elaborated on the economic impact of the project, stating that it would create around 3000 direct jobs, with even more indirect job opportunities. He emphasised the significant activity and foreign exchange generation the project would bring, potentially boosting the country’s GDP. Regarding the future of tourism, Suresh noted a trend towards quick decision-making and travel, as well as a growing demand for experiential tourism, which projects like theirs aim to cater to.
Suresh discussed the changes observed in business travel post-Covid, noting a recent resurgence aligned with economic development and Colombo’s transformation. He highlighted the significance of the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) market, especially considering Colombo’s proximity to India, a major source market. Suresh pointed out the opportunities presented by projects like theirs, which are enhancing conferencing facilities to cater to corporate travellers and tap into the MICE market, potentially playing a significant role in Colombo’s tourism sector.
Kamal described his experience at the Arabian Travel Market, acknowledging it as a valuable platform that has evolved over its 32-year history. It was his first time attending, driven by a desire to explore market dynamics and potential partnerships, particularly given Colombo’s proximity to the Middle East. He observed a great potential for collaboration and gained insights into travel trends and preferences in the region. Kamal highlighted the introduction of AI-driven technology in the travel sector, which he found promising for business growth and automation. Overall, he found the experience enlightening and enriching.
Kamal highlighted the significant announcements made during the press conference attended by the Sri Lankan Tourism Minister at the Travel Market. He noted the agreement with Emirates Airlines to increase flight frequency, including the addition of A380 flights, which he considered crucial for boosting tourism by enhancing seat capacity. The minister also expressed excitement about the Cinnamon Life project and John Keells Group’s investments in transforming Sri Lanka into a premier destination. Kamal perceived the minister’s message as overwhelmingly positive, signalling a hopeful outlook for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, especially considering its recent recovery from a challenging period.
Kamal attributed Sri Lanka’s rapid recovery in tourism to several factors, including the resilience of the Sri Lankan people. He acknowledged the nation’s history of overcoming challenges, such as the 30-year war and the Easter bombings, highlighting its ability to bounce back quickly. Kamal praised the efforts of the current administration and the tourism minister’s team for their exceptional work. Additionally, he recognised the contributions of private investors and industry companies like Cinnamon Hotels and Resorts in promoting the destination. Kamal emphasised the collective effort of all stakeholders, which he believed had a ripple effect in driving the recovery of the destination.
In discussing the transformative impact of investment on Colombo and Sri Lanka as a whole, Kamal highlighted the developments in the port city, such as reclaimed land and the completion of projects, inviting further investment opportunities. Kamal noted the diverse activities and attractions offered in the port city, including food and beverage options, beach clubs, and recreational activities, which enhance Colombo’s appeal to visitors. He emphasized the port city as an attractive investment destination. Regarding other Cinnamon properties in Colombo, Kamal mentioned three hotels: Cinnamon Grand, Cinnamon Lakeside, and Cinnamon Red. He traced the origin of the Cinnamon brand to Cinnamon Grand Hotel, which is approaching its 50th year. Kamal highlighted the historical significance of Cinnamon Grand, including its renowned fine dining restaurant, London Grill, which is also marking its 50th anniversary next year, promising a significant celebration.
Kamal described the three Cinnamon hotels in Colombo, highlighting their distinct offerings: Cinnamon Grand for business travellers, Cinnamon Red for express service, and Cinnamon Lakeside as a leisure resort. He noted their diverse amenities catering to different guest segments. Regarding corporate travel, Kamal noted a resurgence post-Covid due to pent-up demand, especially for investment-related and diplomatic purposes. Cinnamon Grand serves as a hub for business travellers due to its strategic location.
Kamal explained the appeal of Colombo as a destination, accenting its diverse offerings for both business and leisure travellers. He highlighted activities such as diving to explore World War 2 shipwrecks, bird watching tours, and wellness options available in the city. Additionally, Kamal praised Colombo’s greenery, describing it as a well-designed city with ample natural surroundings despite its vibrancy.
